Addressing the internal conflict within the State of Libya.

About the committee

Ever since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the State of Libya has remained fractured, with the Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli, being the only one internationally recognised governing body, and the Government of National Stability occupying most of the oil infrastructure and using it as a leverage to keep fighting the GNU. The problems do not stop here, as both the fractions of the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda operate in the region, creating both terror for the locals and spillovers to nearby countries of the Sahel region, Egypt, and Algeria. The Security Council has already taken measures to stabilise the country, including key resolutions such as Resolution 1970(2011), imposing an arms embargo and asset freeze, 1973(2011), which authorised all Member States to use any means necessary to protect civilians, and 2009(2011), which established the UN Support Mission in Libya(UNSMIL) in order to help the transitional government. This committee is highly expected to soften the situation without harming the civilians of Libya and nearby countries.

In most democratic countries the right to peaceful assembly is a basic right written in the constitution. However, the relationship between the state's duty to maintain public order and the citizen’s right of assembly is a lot of times a very hard thing to balance for most countries. Recent events all around the globe draw attention to instances where the line between legitimate law enforcement and disproportionate use of force has blurred, resulting in many lives injured as well as lost and the erosion of public trust. In this topic, prospective delegates will have a chance to examine legal frameworks already put in place, analyze why these protocols are frequently violated, as well as explore the aftermath of such events.

About the committee

Obstetric violence refers to the mistreatment of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and maternity care. It includes actions or behaviors by medical staff that disregard or harm women’s physical and emotional needs, such as verbal abuse, denial of access to pain relief, lack of informed consent for medical procedures, restrictions on movement, and other harmful practices. As birth rates decline, the conditions in which women give birth also deteriorate. In this topic, prospective delegates will have the opportunity to examine obstetric violence both as a violation of women’s rights and within the broader context of gender-based violence and discrimination against women in healthcare systems, while exploring ways to promote respectful maternity care.
