The Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

About the committee

The conflict happening in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the longest-lasting and perplexing humanitarian crises in modern history. It rose from decades of political instability, armed violence, and disputes over natural resources, which were further emphasised by foreign influence. The effects of the conflict include: 6 million fatalities, countless people displaced and virtually non-existent economic development. Violence persists in the east, despite the numerous peace agreements and international interventions such as MONUSCO and armed groups such as the M23, and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda still remain active. Efforts to prevent further development require vast regional coordination, based on diplomacy, establishing peacekeeping frameworks, disarmament, protection of human rights and economic progress. The UN and the African Union, have emphasised the need to address what fuels the violence, which includes corruption, tensions of ethnic backgrounds, and disputes over critical resources. This topic urges the delegates to consider sustainable, long-term, and African-led solutions, which would prevent the escalation of the conflict, and further international conflicts it could cause.

Private military and security companies play a growing role in modern warfare and they pose threat to international peace. They operate within legal grey zones limiting the oversight and accountability. Whilst there have been already multiple unethical acts committed by them, the already existing frameworks are not efficient enough. Addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Refugee Camps

About the committee

Violations of women’s rights in refugee camps is a serious global issue which raises concerns about the safety and dignity of displaced women and girls. Refugee camps, which should provide protection and humanitarian assistance, often become places where women face discrimination and violence. Even though international organizations and humanitarian agencies aim to protect women’s rights, the effectiveness of these efforts is often not fully successful due to a high dependency on resources, cultural and social norms and political stability. Therefore, it is essential to examine the causes of women’s rights violations in refugee camps and the importance of assisting women through education, legal protection and access to support services.

Addressing the Illicit Mining and Trade of Natural Resources with an Emphasis on the Amazon Basin

About the committee

Illegal gold mining is a major driver of biodiversity loss and social tensions in the whole South America, disproportionately affecting Indigenous communities and other vulnerable groups. The whole supply chain of gold and other natural resources is complex, involves many countries and is entirely fueled with violence. The recent gold rush has cleared over 140,000 hectares of rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon and is accelerating as armed groups move into the region to profit from very high gold prices. While many measures have been introduced to address the issue, it continues to reveal gaps in oversight and coordination across countries and supply chains, posing a great danger not only to the environment but also to the economy and the lives of people.

Discussing Ways to Increase Availability, Ethical Access and Oversight of Transplantation of Human Cells, Tissues and Organs

About the committee

Transplantations are one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine. In 2023 over 172 thousand transplants were performed. Although thousands of transplants are performed each year, a need for organ donations persists. This is mostly due to varying laws, cultural differences, as well as different policies. The World Health Organization has already undertaken action regarding the need for organs, tissues and human cells, such as establishing the Guiding Principles on Human Cell, Tissue and Organ Transplantation, but the issue still remains pressing. For this reason, further action and cooperation between nations and NGOs is the key to helping patients receive the necessary human cells, organs or tissues for transplantation and assure ethical access and transparency.

Addressing the Surge in Narco-Economies Fuelled by Cryptocurrencies

About the committee

Cryptocurrencies pose as a real danger due to them being exceptionally hard to track. That’s why they have been the currency of choice for many narco-economies around the world. Some big operations like the Russian Hydra black market have been dismantled trough cooperation between countries, however the issue only seems to be getting bigger. If proper adjustments are not introduced, major cartels will be able to scale their operations even more leading to putting thousands at risk of death through overdoses.

About the committee

The Press Corps committee is a unique committee in which delegates will have the opportunity to share information on what's happening during the Cemun conference using various types of media. The delegates work in pairs to balance the technical and creative sides of Press Corps. Each pair has to walk through committees, conduct interviews, gather or film material, and show their own original style. This committee requires a delegate to write a position paper before the conference, where they (in pairs) outline their background.
