Mitigating the humanitarian crisis and global energy spillover resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz

About the committee

Following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military targets on 28 February 2026, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, a waterway through which roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade and a fifth of its liquefied natural gas had previously flowed. With tanker traffic reduced to near zero and thousands of vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf, the closure has triggered both a severe humanitarian emergency and a global energy shock whose effects are being felt far beyond the region. As the principal body charged with the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council is uniquely positioned to address the immediate fallout and the broader risks this crisis poses to global stability.

The exploitation by corporations in regions such as Latin America has left permanent economic and social scars, including inequality, a degraded environment, and poor worker protection. This legacy remains an ongoing challenge to development and stability, often setting off cycles of poverty and distrust of organizations. By analyzing these consequences, ECOSOC can discuss strategies for sustainable development, corporate accountability, and equitable resource distribution in order to support affected communities and prevent future exploitation.

In 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the solidarity of the European Union became gravely endangered as member states took different approaches towards the conflict. Four years later, the EU is still trying to find a way to secure its economic stability, as many areas of its economy continue to rely on Russian resources, or are hurt by decoupling from Russian markets since the implementation of sanctions. The European Council focuses on finding well-balanced solutions to this issue, while maintaining unanimity everywhere where possible.

AI has shifted the problem from "words" to "realities." The most pressing issue is Image-Based Sexual Abuse. The UN Women committee aims to draft a resolution that moves beyond mere condemnation. The committee seeks to establish a Global Code of Conduct for Digital Safety, ensuring that the digital era serves as a space for female empowerment rather than a new frontier for victimization.

The regional instability in the Middle East following the 2026 US-Israeli strikes on Iran, commonly referred to as the 2026 Iran War, has become one of the most urgent issues facing the region. Rising tensions have affected not only Iran and Israel, but also the Member States of the League of Arab States, and the instability and violence have merged with parallel conflicts, including the ongoing Red Sea Crisis, putting the entire region in an incredibly dangerous position. The risk of further escalation continues to increase, while threatening security, economic stability, energy markets and the well-being of civilians.
