Addressing the situation in Yemen and its implications for security and stability in the Red Sea

About the committee

The conflict in Yemen began in September 2014, when Houthi forces seized control of the capital city, Sana’a, and rapidly dismantled the country’s key state institutions. By March 21, 2015, the situation escalated significantly as the Houthi-led Supreme Revolutionary Committee introduced measures aimed at overthrowing President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is still recognised by the great part of the international community as the legitimate head of state. The situation has been accelerating since 19 October 2023, when the Houthis launched missiles at Israeli targets. Since then, we have seen numerous attacks on merchant as well as commercial vessels, affecting shipping and trades worldwide.

Deciding upon the fate of Europe after the end of the Second World War

About the committee

In February 1945, as the Second World War neared its end, the leaders of the Big Three (USA, UK and USSR) met in the Crimean town of Yalta to determine the fate of post-war Europe. They focused on matters such as dividing the continent into spheres of influence, deciding upon occupation zones in Germany, addressing the right to self-determination, and setting the framework for the future United Nations. For the purposes of this committee, the other Allied countries, as well as Axis representatives, will be present, and special Rules of Procedure will be adopted. Join us in September to decide the fate of Europe, and whether it will become a beacon of prosperity, or will it fall victim to another total war.

Establishing debt restructuring programs for highly indebted, developing countries

About the committee

Many developing nations face crippling debt burdens that hinder economic growth and social development. The ECOSOC committee will focus on restructuring debt programs for highly indebted, developing nations in order to ensure, that such debts will benefit them, not the lending institutions. When relying on IMF and other international loans, countries are required to implement strict measures such as cutting public spending, removing subsidies, and raising taxes, which are beneficial to the loaners, not the country receiving such loans. Such policies frequently result in reduced access to healthcare, education, and other essential services. Additionally, concerns persist about the loss of national sovereignty and increased external influence over domestic affairs.

With the ability to alter the human genome with precision and efficiency, concerns have emerged around consent, equity, biosecurity, potential misuse and the long-term consequences of germline editing. This committee will examine these challenges, weighing scientific innovation against the risks of eugenics, inequality and genetic discrimination.

About the committee

Maritime piracy, particularly around the Horn of Africa, poses a significant threat to international trade, regional stability, and the safety of seafarers. Despite global efforts, the area remains vulnerable due to political instability, weak law enforcement, and economic hardship, making it a key issue for the UNODC to address.

Addressing the issue of femicide and gender-based violence in Latin America

About the committee

Latin America has the highest femicide and gender based violence in the world. According to the United Nations and regional bodies like ECLAC (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean) at least 11 women are killed every day due to gender-based reasons across the region. One-quarter of women ages 15-49 in Latin America and have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The issue reveals deep-rooted structural inequalities, cultural norms, and institutional failures, making it a seriously complex problem. The CSW will try to undertake all measures possible to combat this issue.

Managing the threat of misinformation on private social media platforms and introducing user protection regulations

About the committee

Privately owned social media platforms like X, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram operate without clear oversight, raising concerns about user protection, transparency, foreign interference in domestic affairs, and generally impact on society and political discourse. This committee will tackle said issues, balancing freedom of speech with the need for regulation and safety, especially in the face of hostile disinformation and propaganda campaigns by adversarial actors; and will explore how modern technology challenges international norms and democratic values.

Reporting on TriMUN 2025

About the committee

The Press Corps is an irregular committee representing the media usually present at diplomatic conferences. The delegates of the committee act as TriMUN’s journalists, reporting on various events during the conference, related to both debate proceedings and events within the participant community. During their time at the conference, they visit the other committees and conduct interviews, record proceedings, and conduct press conferences with the other delegates to grant the rest of the conference more insight into the happenings of each committee. Working in teams of two, and assisted by the editors-in-chief (chairs), the delegates of the Press Corps then publish various pieces of media on the conference website, bringing the conference together and expanding the reach and significance of individual committees among TriMUN’s attendees.
