How to join Model UN: find a conference and apply

In short

You join Model UN by applying to a conference, and you can do it on your own. Pick a conference that is taking applications, sign up as a delegate, rank the committees and countries you want and answer the organizers' questions.

You need no club, no experience and no invitation, because about nine in ten conferences on mymun accept students who apply on their own. If your school already sends a group, ask its leader for the invitation link instead.

How to join MUN: on your own or with your school

Apply on your own from the conference page, or with a group a teacher or student leader signs up.

Say you find one tonight: a weekend conference two hours from home, with a committee you like and three weeks left to apply. The whole way in takes five steps:

  1. Find a conference on mymun's list that is taking applications, near you or online.
  2. Choose how you go, on your own or with your school's delegation.
  3. Apply as a delegate and rank your committee and country preferences.
  4. Answer the questions and write a short motivation letter if asked.
  5. Pay the fee if there is one, then wait for your country.

On your own, you apply from the conference page and the organizers decide on you alone. With a delegation, a leader signs up a group from your school or university. That leader is a student head delegate or a faculty advisor, usually a teacher.

TravelYou and your familyUsually your school

If a group from your school is already going, go with it, and tell its leader which committee you want. If you are under 18 and must travel, a school group with a teacher makes it easier for your parents to say yes. And when a conference takes no delegations, friends simply apply on their own.

If your school has no Model UN club

Apply on your own, which most conferences allow, or ask a teacher to take a few of you as a delegation. Find two or three friends who want to come first, and a yes is easier to give. A teacher can also start a club with you.

Which conference should you join first?

Pick one that is affordable and friendly to beginners, online or near you.

Your first conference does not need a famous name. Online conferences are the easiest start, because they cost little and need no travel. An in-person one near you makes a good first or second.

Start on mymun's conference list, the largest there is. Narrow it to high school or university, or open the map to see what is near you. To browse by country, open your continent's page: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America or Oceania.

What to check before you apply to a first conference
Check What to look for
Level and ageYour level, and an age range that fits you
DistanceOnline in your time zone, or near enough to skip a night away
CostA fee you can pay, plus travel and the rest
DatesNo clash with exams, and weeks to prepare
LanguageA language you can follow all day
Past editionsGood ratings from earlier delegates, or a place in the Hall of Fame

If the fee is all that stands in your way, ask the organizers about a reduced fee before you rule the conference out.

When should you apply?

Apply as soon as you have chosen, and months ahead if you need a visa.

Apply early, because many organizers decide as applications arrive and late applicants get the seats that are left. On mymun, applications close about a week before a typical conference, and large in-person ones often open about three months ahead. If applications have closed, ask the organizers whether a delegate seat is still free.

Need a visa? Pick your conference months ahead, and ask for an invitation letter once you are accepted. Applying to two conferences is fine if you withdraw from the one you drop as soon as you decide.

How to apply on mymun, step by step

Choose your role, rank your preferences, answer the questions and submit.

Applications look much the same everywhere, on mymun or on a conference's own form. Each conference picks the steps it needs, so yours may be shorter.

  1. Choose your role. Apply as a delegate on your own, or open the link your group's leader sent you.
  2. Rank your preferences. Most conferences ask for up to three committees, or committees and countries (how to choose).
  3. Answer the questions. Most ask about your experience, and some ask for a short motivation letter.
  4. Check and submit. Organizers only see submitted applications, and after that only they can change yours.

Which committee and country should you choose?

Choose the committee first, then mix one famous country with two that fewer delegates ask for.

Rank first the committee whose topics you would happily read about for three weeks, and look for committees marked Beginner, which are written for first-timers. At high school conferences these are most often UNEP, UNICEF and SOCHUM.

Common Model UN formats and whether they suit a first conference
Format What it is like For a first conference?
General Assembly committees such as DISECLarge rooms and broad topics, with many partners and few turns to speak.Yes, the usual start.
Security Council15 members, five with a veto. Small, fast and often experienced. After a conference or two.
Specialised bodies such as WHOOne field each, with concrete topics.Yes, often marked Beginner.
Crisis committeesA small cabinet reacting to updates, where you often play a person.Usually not the first.

Exercise

Pick a committee for your first conference

Your first conference offers four committees. You want to speak several times and find allies. Which do you rank first?

  1. Option A The Security Council, 15 seats. Show feedback

Not quite Few allies, a veto over every resolution and often experienced delegates. Try it later.

  2. Option B UNICEF, about 40 delegates, marked Beginner. Show feedback

Right Enough countries to build a bloc, few enough that you speak more than once, and chairs who expect first-timers.

  3. Option C DISEC, about 150 delegates. Show feedback

Not quite Many partners, but in a room of 150 you may speak once.

  4. Option D A historical crisis cabinet. Show feedback

Not quite You play a person and react to updates at speed: a lot to learn at once.

Rank UNICEF first, and keep the Security Council and crisis committees for later.

Check your answer

The best country for a first MUN is one you can get and defend, not the most famous. One preference in five on mymun names the same five: the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China and Germany. Mix one of them with two Member States fewer delegates ask for, and your chances improve.

Pick countries with clear statements on your topic, because they are easier to research and to defend. A country the topic affects, such as a coastal state on ocean pollution, has a reason to speak in every debate.

Your preferences guide the organizers but do not bind them. You will very likely get a committee you listed, but your country is less certain. Many conferences call it your portfolio.

Your application answers and motivation letter

List your experience in one fixed format, say plainly if you have none, and write a short letter in three parts.

Expect a question about your Model UN experience, and often one about why you chose your committee or country. Answer the second in two or three sentences: what you know of the topic, why your country interests you, what you will read next.

Your Model UN experience

If this is your first conference, say so, and name what you did instead, such as a debate club. No experience is a normal answer, not a weak one. If you have been before, list conferences newest first, one per line, as in “City Youth MUN 2026, UNICEF, Peru, honourable mention”.

How to answer “Why do you want to join MUN?”

Answer in three parts, 80 to 150 words in all: why the topic matters to you, something you did, and what you want to learn. Name something real, such as a problem you have seen or a club you run, instead of lines any applicant could write.

Open with the topic and one real reason, not with adjectives about you. Write it yourself, because a chatbot's letter sounds like every other one and organizers notice.

A motivation letter for a first conference
  1. WhyI want to join UNEP because plastic on our beach is a problem I see every summer, and I have joined the clean-up twice.
  2. What you didThis will be my first Model UN conference. I run our debate club's practice, so I am used to speaking for a minute. I have read the background guide and the UN Environment Assembly's 2022 decision to negotiate a treaty on plastic pollution.
  3. To learnI want to understand why those talks are so hard, and leave able to write my first resolution paragraph.

Rewrite a generic motivation letter

This letter could come from anyone. Rewrite it in 80 to 150 words for a committee you would like to join, in the same three parts.

  1. LetterI am very passionate about international relations. Model UN is a great opportunity to develop my public speaking and leadership skills. I am hardworking, dedicated and a team player, and I would be a valuable addition to your conference.

  1. AnswerI would like to join SOCHUM because its second topic, education for refugee children, is close to home: two classmates arrived from Ukraine in 2022, and I helped them with German homework for a year. This would be my first conference, but I chair our class council, so I can keep my points short. I have read the background guide and started on my top country's statements. I want to learn how delegates turn a speech into a draft resolution.

It gives a real reason, things done instead of adjectives, and one goal. No other applicant could send it.

After you submit

The organizers decide, you may pay a fee, then you get your country and start preparing.

An email confirms your application, and what happens after you apply covers the decision, the fee and your country. Once you know your country, read your committee's background guide (some conferences call it a study guide) and research its position. Write a position paper if asked, and get ready for your first conference.

Questions and answers

Can I join Model UN without a school club?

Yes. Most conferences accept students who apply on their own, so find one and apply as a delegate.

Do I need experience to apply?

No. Many delegates start with none. Say so, and look for committees marked Beginner.

Will I get accepted?

Very likely. Most applicants who hear back get in, about nine in ten at high school conferences on mymun and about eight in ten at university ones.

What is portfolio preference in MUN?

Your portfolio is the country, or sometimes the person, you represent. Portfolio preference means the countries you rank when you apply.

How do I register for a Model UN conference?

At most conferences, registering simply means applying as a delegate from the conference page. A teacher can register your school as a delegation instead.

Can I join MUN online?

Yes. Many conferences run online over video calls, with the same rules and usually a much lower fee. Browse online conferences and apply the same way.

Do I need my parents' permission to apply?

If you are under 18, some conferences ask for a parent's consent form, in the application or after you are accepted.

How much does it cost to join Model UN?

Each conference sets its own fee. What Model UN costs shows typical fees and travel.
