About the committee

In recent times, incidents of Quran desecration have greatly risen in frequency around the world, creating a hostile atmosphere for Muslims, while desensitising societies to religion-directed hate. Technological development, such as Artificial Intelligence and the widespread availability of social media, has given harmful actors an effective platform to spread dissent and divide people. Such harmful stereotypes and information have fueled incidents involving direct disrespect for Islam, such as the Quran burnings in Sweden and Denmark in 2023, which resulted in calls for cutting ties with such Western nations by the citizens of Islamic countries, such as Iran and Algeria. Leaders of the nations summoned representatives of the named Western countries to condemn such actions, further severing international cooperation between the sides.

About the committee

In today’s increasingly digital world, cybercrime has become a major threat to national security, democracy, and global stability. From election interference to attacks on government systems, these incidents have grown in both frequency and impact, especially during modern conflicts such as the War in Ukraine and the Gaza conflict. Within UNODC, the delegates will debate practical solutions including international cooperation, cybersecurity capacity-building, prevention strategies, and stronger responses to organised cybercrime.
