Protecting Vulnerable Small-Island Populations Affected by the Impacts of Climate Induced Migration

About the committee

The international organization for migration (IOM) works to address migration challenges, provide and promote international cooperation on migration governance. Climate change is a rapidly evolving threat to the existence of low-lying island nations, with rising sea levels placing countries such as Tuvalu and Kiribati at risk of becoming partially or entirely uninhabitable. This issue concerns both island states and the international community, when citizens have no other option other than migration across borders. Unlike traditional migration crises, climate-induced displacement raises questions regarding statehood, sovereignty, citizenship, and the extent to which the international community is responsible. As millions may be forced to flee in upcoming years, delegates are invited to discuss the ways in which the international community should respond to climate migration while taking into account humanitarian responsibilities, national security and sustainable migration management.

Enhancing Multilateral Frameworks to Prevent Arms Smuggling in Africa, with an emphasis on the Horn of Africa Region

About the committee

DISEC, also known as the First Committee of the General Assembly serves as a forum for discussing issues related to global peace and security. Topic of this committee concerns strengthening international and regional cooperation in order to combat the illicit trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Africa with emphasis on the Horn of Africa region. Illegal flow of weapons in this area fuels various conflicts increasing instability and threatening regional peace. The debate will focus on measures that States and regional organisations can undertake to prevent arms smuggling, especially in Horn of Africa. The committee will also examine how illicit arms smuggling fuels conflicts and terrorism, while exploring practical multilateral solutions to address this issue.

Preventing Radicalization and Ensuring Humane Conditions in Prisons, with Special Regard to the Implementation of Nelson Mandela Rules

About the committee

Established in 1997, The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime focuses on working with governments and intergovernmental organisations to develop strategies, legislation and common solutions to issues related to organized crime and the abuse of drugs. In 2015 the United Nations adopted Nelson Mandela Rules, regarding the proper treatment of prisoners. Those aim to serve as minimum standards for nations to treat their prison populations humanely and to promote reform over punishment. The UNODC is the custodian of Nelson Mandela Rules and it works to aid member states in the implementation of them, support prison reform, and give rechnical assistance.

Addressing the Misuse of Strategic Lawsuits (SLAPPs) to Silence Journalists

About the committee

The Human Rights Council is the principal intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) are legal actions brought by powerful entities with the aim of silencing critics. They often take the form of defamation lawsuits, filed not with the intention of winning the case, but rather of suppressing the press. They result in high legal costs, as well as the stress and time associated with court proceedings, creating a so-called ”chilling effect” that deters journalists from publicly criticising a company, organisation, or individual. In such cases, social standing and financial power undermine the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

Developing Sustainable Solutions for Aging Populations Stemming From Declining Fertility Rates

About the committee

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, and is responsible for coordinating the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development. The global average birth rate per woman has declined by over half in the span of 60 years, from 5 children per woman to around 2.2 births per woman as of 2026. The decline of fertility rates have raised serious concerns internationally, as they decrease the population of working citizens while the elderly population grows. This leads to higher costs of healthcare, slower economic growth, labour shortages, and more. Delegates in ECOSOC will address the socio-economic consequences of rapidly decreasing birth rates, helping protect the long-term economic stability of both families and national economies, while also respecting the sovereignty of all states.

Strengthening International Mechanisms to Protect and Assist Women Affected by Armed Conflicts

About the committee

In conflict zones, the obvious humanitarian crisis is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface, women and girls are facing a whole other battle. One where their rights are systematically stripped away. They're subjected to sexual violence, cut off from basic gynecological care, pushed out of the economy, and completely left out of the peace talks that decide their futures. As the UN body dedicated entirely to gender equality and women's empowerment, UN Women is where these issues are supposed to take center stage. Our job is to debate real, practical ways to strengthen the systems meant to protect and support women in war zones, and make sure those systems don't fail when they're needed most.
