About the committee

Established in 1945, the UNSC is the UN organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It is the only UN organ with the power to create resolutions binding on all Member States. Its powers, outlined in the UN Charter, include the ability to establish UN Peacekeeping Missions, authorising military action and imposing sanctions. It also recommends the admission of new Member States to the General Assembly and approves amendments to the UN Charter.

The WHO is a specialised agency of the UN and is the largest intergovernmental health organisation at the international level. Among its responsibilities, the WHO promotes the control of epidemic and endemic diseases; provides training in public health; and promotes the establishment of international standards for biological products.
