Beginner - As the Earth's climate continues to warm, a substantial reduction of the Arctic ice has now become unavoidable, opening up for new trade routes and resource extraction, but also a new arena for global conflict. Not to mention massive ecological impacts. The General Assembly will discuss how to tackle this new geopolitical reality and how the world can make the best of the opportunities and minimise the risks. The General Assembly is the main body of the UN for policy and debate, where every country is represented. It writes resolutions on broad and non-technical questions, making it a suitable committee for beginners.

Safeguarding human rights in small island developing states under threat by climate change

About the committee

Beginner - Small island developing states, usually situated in the Pacific or Indian Oceans, are some of the most vulnerable communities to climate change. Threatened not only by sea level rise, extreme whether events, resource scarcity, ecological collapse and many other risks, often leading to infringements of fundamental human rights. As climate change is already affecting these states' security and safety, it is imperative for the Human Rights Council to address the question of how to safeguard the rights of people at risk in these communities. The United Nations Human Rights Council is the main body of the UN tasked with promoting and protecting human rights around the world.

Reforms to global debt relief and loan conditionality

About the committee

Beginner/Intermediate - In recent years, global sovereign debt has reached record heights, and particularly for many developing countries, crippling debt and interest payments severly hamper the ability to develop. At the same time, some accuse China of weaponising its loans to exercise control over developing countries, while others accuse the IMF of the same practice. ECOSOC will debate this critical issue and consider possible reforms to how soverieign loans are offered and forgiven. ECOSOC is the organ tasked with coordinating the UN's economic and social activities. With a broad range of voices and somewhat technical topic, ECOSOC is well suited for both beginner and intermediate delegates.

About the committee

Intermediate - As transatlatic relations worsen, the Russian threat looms in the east and China continues its meteoric rise in economic power, Europe risks standing alone and falling behind in an increasingly dangerous world. With this troubling backdrop the European Council will convene to discuss how European defence and innovation can be strengthened for the EU to stay relevant and strong in these challenging times. All while still keeping its commitment to fighting the often forgotten threat of climate change. The European Council is one of the principal institutions of the EU. Here, Heads of State and Government from all EU countries meet and decide on both the long-term strategy of the EU and solve crises that face the Union. The EC requires delegates to represent a national leader on a more precise issue and is therefore suited to intermediate delegates.

Emergency meeting: Srpska's new secession from Bosnia

About the committee

Advanced - It's December 2025, after 30 years of reletive stability in Bosnia Herzegovina, tensions have boiled over and the Serbian majority entity Republika Srpska has once again declared indepedence. In this hypothetical scenario, delegates will have to tackle a sticky situation which may soon become reality and try to find a solution which prevents further escalation and possible armed ethnic conflict from returing to the Balkans. The UNSC is the body of the UN which is tasked with upholding international peace and security. It is the only UN body which can take legally binding decisions or authorise the use of force, but often deadlocks due to the veto right of the 5 permanent members. Due to its special rules and tough-to-navigate topics, it is best suited for more experienced delegates.

Advanced - Join the ICJ committee to argue or rule on this landmark historic case which beyond ruling on the key issue of maritime borders was a key precedent in international law and the formation of customary law. Join this international moot court proceeding to practice your legal skills, sharpen your knowledge and increase your understanding of international proceedings The International Court of Justice, situated in the Hague, is the UN body which adjudicates disputes between countries and gives opinions on international legal questions. In MUN this committee is basically an internationally flavoured moot court. Due to its very technical nature and specific rules, the ICJ is best suited for more experienced delegates.
