The Prosecutor v. Ratko Mladić

About the committee

Introducing the new International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia Committee, simulating the ad hoc court that was once established to judge some of the worst war crimes that humanity has ever seen. Here, the delegates will face the case of Ratko Mladić, equally known as the "Butcher of Bosnia." A man accused of taking many lives and destroying many families. A man indicted on 11 counts, with some as severe as genocide. The prosecuting counsel will have to collect sufficient evidence to prove this man guilty of the aforementioned crimes. The defense, on the other hand, will face the difficulty of proving their counterparts wrong and asking the tribunal - was it really Mladić's initiative? Or are we faced with slander? All levels are welcome, however a background in law/debate would be preferred. ⚠️WARNING ⚠️ : This committee will touch on topics that some participants might find disturbing or sensitive (such as, but not limited to: military activity/war crimes, genocide, sexual assault). Discretion is advised.

The Press Committee serves a unique role in UCLMUN Edition X, providing comprehensive coverage and analysis of events during the conference, across all committees and during socials. Unlike the structure of General Assembly committees, press delegates will each represent a news outlet and be present during debate sessions in different committees, observing and documenting the proceedings. They will write journalistic articles that capture the essence of discussions, conduct insightful interviews with delegates, chairs and key figures, and create engaging social media updates. The Press Committee offers diverse perspectives from news outlets of various political leanings and reporting countries, fostering a deeper understanding of the topics discussed in other committees.

Shifting Tides, Lingering Echoes

About the committee

For thousands of years, whenever humans saw phenomena they cannot explain, they would attribute them to supernatural acts, perhaps using religion as an explanation.. After the Age of Enlightenment, however, humans have learnt the Scientific Method, and developed robust theories of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to explain most of the mysteries that have intrigued their ancestors. And so, in modern times, supernatural phenomena have become little more than tropes in fictions. ■■■■■■■■■■ For thousands of years, humans have engaged in tribal conflict. As tribes got bigger, feudal states were born. Particular ambitious people would then attempt to conquer their weaker neighbours. Imperialism is then born. Yet, after millennia of conflicts, humans would fight two World Wars, bringing the ends of most traditional empires. Under American and Soviet domination, imperialism, at least in the traditional sense, has ended. ■■■■■■■■■■ Now, imagine a scenario. What if something that cannot be explained scientifically suddenly happened in the modern age? An effect that has no cause, an action without reaction, a product without reactants, a species without precursors? ■■■■■■■■■■ Maybe the spectres from the past are not as ghostly as they seem...
