The Art of Alliances: Achieving Stability through Global Cooperation

About CUIMUN

Cambridge University International Model United Nations, dating back to 1994, is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious MUN conferences in Europe. During each of its 26 editions, it welcomed around 500 delegates from all across the globe and provided them with a platform to discuss issues of global importance within diverse UN committees, agencies, funds and programmes. CUIMUN is part of Cambridge University United Nations Association founded in 1946 in the spirit of promoting international cooperation. Although CUIMUN 2024 will be an online event, rather than an in-person conference as the previous editions have been, we are confident that our conference will retain the spirit, prestige and high level of debating of the previous editions of CUIMUN.

About CUIMUN 2024

The Art of Alliances: Achieving Stability through Global Cooperation
Historically, opposing alliances, like the Entente and Central Powers or NATO and the Warsaw Pact, had been considered the source of polarity, international tensions and wars. Such a tendency of the alliances to distort stability continues up to the present which is seen in the division of the modern-day world into the US-aligned countries, the Russian-Chinese-Iranian bloc and the Global South. Under these circumstances, it is impossible for the UN to achieve unity in promoting its goals by means of diplomacy.

Therefore, the 27th edition of CUIMUN aims to reshape the understanding of alliances in the 21st century by showing that they can be the tool for securing peace and stability through cross-border cooperation. A global alliance of countries could collaborate to achieve common goals, such as geopolitical, nuclear and space security, elimination of ethnic and gender-based discrimination or reduction of economic and social inequalities. This may remedy the increasing multipolarity.

During a three day virtual conference, 392 delegates from all around the world will debate on ways to enhance global cooperation and prevent further division of countries into rival blocs. CUIMUN 2024 features 16 committees, including old favourites (Security Council, General Assembly, International Court of Justice and Historical Crisis) as well as new additions (UN Specialised Agencies and NATO).

Delegate Experience

  • There will be a virtual Opening Ceremony on Friday after which the first committee sessions will take place.
  • Delegates will enjoy high quality debating in committee sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The conference's schedule will created so as to take account of the online character of the event.
  • The committee sessions will be run by our team of experienced chairpersons. In keeping with the international nature of the conference, our chairpersons come from 11 different countries and are studying at a variety of top European Universities.
  • All delegates who may be interested in studying at the University of Cambridge in the future have the opportunity of taking part in informal Q+A sessions with Cambridge University students. This is a great way to find out what life at Cambridge is actually like.
  • In order to maintain the social aspect of an in-person conference, you will have the opportunity to join networking and social events through CUIMUN social media. Delegates will have the opportunity to be featured in our Faces of CUIMUN'24 campaign.
  • There will be moderators present at all live online events who will check chats and monitor events to ensure that offensive material is removed, and if necessary remove individuals in breach of our online conduct policy.
  • There will be a virtual Closing Ceremony on Sunday
  • We also have some plans for fun and intellectually stimulating events in the lead up to the conference, the details of which we will release closer to the event so make sure to follow us on Instagram (@cuimun2024) to receive updates!
  • All delegates will receive a virtual certificate of participation (as well as a certificates of best delegate and honourable mentions for those who win those awards).
  • Delegates also have the option of ordering a hard-copy certificate of participation if they wish (more details on that in the How to Apply section below).

  • Early bird registration is open from 09/09/2024 - 29/09/2024. The early bird delegate fee is only £8.50 so make sure to register quickly!
  • Regular registration is open from 30/09/2024 - 15/10/2024.
