About the committee

The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) stands at the forefront of the United Nations’ efforts to strengthen global responses to crime prevention, criminal justice, and the rule of law. As a principal policymaking body under ECOSOC, the Commission plays a crucial role in addressing both traditional and emerging forms of crime through international cooperation, legal frameworks, and capacity-building. At YTMUN 5.0, the CCPCJ convenes to deliberate on the pressing challenge of maritime crime and smuggling in the Indo-Pacific region—a vast and strategically vital area that carries over half of global maritime trade. The Indo-Pacific’s complex geography, extensive coastlines, busy shipping lanes, and varying levels of maritime governance have made it increasingly vulnerable to crimes such as drug trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, piracy, illegal fishing, and the illicit movement of commercial goods. Maritime crime in this region does not exist in isolation. It is deeply interconnected with transnational organized crime networks, weak port and border controls, technological exploitation, and socio-economic vulnerabilities across coastal communities. These illicit activities threaten not only regional security and economic stability, but also human rights, environmental sustainability, and the safety of international trade routes. Delegates will be expected to examine how existing international legal instruments, regional cooperation mechanisms, and national criminal justice systems can be strengthened to better prevent, detect, and prosecute maritime crimes.
