    About the committee

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, established on 15 March 2006 to promote and protect human rights around the globe. Its mission encompasses a broad range of human rights issues, including freedom of association, expression, belief and religion, as well as the rights of women, and racial and ethnic minorities. The UNHRC works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages with the United Nations special procedures, which include independent human rights experts and groups that monitor and report on specific human rights situations. Moreover, the UNHRC is responsible for the Universal Periodic Review mechanism, through which the human rights records of all UN member states are reviewed every four years. This process serves as a significant platform for holding states accountable for their human rights obligations and commitments.
