About the committee

Since coming to power the Taliban has carried out a gradual but systematic purge of women from the public sphere of the country, banning women from working in government positions, then from working in offices, and eventually even foreign women from working for the UN or NGOs in the country. By one estimate, 65% of government decrees (90 out of 140) passed since 2021 target women or girls. Women can no longer get driving licenses and even beauty salons and sports have been banned. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs was replaced by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. The UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan has referred to Taliban rule as “gender apartheid”. The UN Women committee will discuss this pressing issue.
