    About the committee

    The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, also known as the Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), addresses matters concerning fundamental human rights on a global scale. The SOCHUM committee was established in 1945 in response to the creation and implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Third committee promotes fundamental freedoms and ideals intended for the benefit of the entire international community. While the resolutions passed by the SOCHUM committee are not legally binding, they can significantly influence practices within Member States, thus shaping international norms and standards to ensure human rights protection. Furthermore, it works with Special Reporters and independent experts to gather and compile the information required to address the aforementioned problem.
