Preservation of Tangible Cultural Heritage Amidst Global Challenges

Cultural objects, as the heritage of humanity, are facing grave danger. With threats such as the rapid rise of technology that hastens globalization, to conflicts that may destroy tangible cultural heritage. Such examples can be seen in Afghanistan, where the Taliban ordered statues depicting humans to be torn down, including religious statues such as the Buddha Statues in the Bamiyan Valley. With data from UNESCO indicating that 56 listed world heritage sites are at risk, it's a race against time to preserve the identity of humans. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization must find a solution to prevent another loss of cultural heritage and provide methods on how to protect said heritage. How can the council come together to ensure that the legacy of our shared history endures for future generations?

Tackling the Escalation of State Security Forces Against Civilians

About the committee

In recent times, there has been an alarming rise in the use of excessive force by state security against civilians, with their actions being justified to maintain public order. The use of force has led to various human rights violations, such as unlawful killing and torture. In certain parts of the world, civilian deaths related to state security reach a concerning number, such as the United States, with around 1000 deaths per year. The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has to address this issue, as the problem goes deeper than the surface. It is important for a robust solution to be voted on within the council, a solution that is able to balance human rights and national law.

The Rising Problem of Unilateralism in Global Trade

About the committee

The use of unilateral trade measures has introduced multiple challenges to global trade. These trade decisions that are often raised with the justification of national security or retaliation against past unfair trades have posed a risk of a much bigger “trade war” that will disrupt the whole flow of the global market and supply chains. Current cases such as the United States Reciprocal Tariff, which has sanctioned multiple countries, with tariffs as high as 145%. As tensions rise and major economic superpowers enact bold decisions, smaller and developing nations are left increasingly vulnerable. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has to discuss and explore the legitimacy and boundaries of unilateral trade actions, while still upholding the importance of transparency, cooperation, and equality to address the justification to use such force in the name of trade rights and global economic stability.
