Diplomacy in an Age of Uncertainty

Organised by the United Nations Student Association of Norway (UNSA Norway), the Norwegian International Model United Nations (NIMUN) convenes delegates in a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly, the principal deliberative forum of the international community. Bringing together students and youth from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, the conference offers a space for structured debate, negotiation, and multilateral engagement on contemporary global challenges.

Set against an international landscape characterised by geopolitical tension, protracted conflicts, and increasing uncertainty, this year’s conference invites delegates to examine the practice of diplomacy under conditions of fragmentation. Particular emphasis will be placed on questions of peace and security, including the challenges of conflict prevention, crisis response, and international cooperation in the face of diverging national interests. Where relevant, discussions will also engage with the human rights implications of contemporary security dilemmas, reflecting the interconnected nature of these domains within the work of the General Assembly.

Through formal debate, moderated and unmoderated caucuses, and the drafting of resolutions, participants will be encouraged to grapple with the complexities of multilateral diplomacy as it unfolds in practice. NIMUN seeks to provide an academically rigorous yet accessible environment in which delegates may deepen their understanding of international affairs, refine their diplomatic skills, and reflect critically on the possibilities and limitations of collective action in an uncertain world.

Alongside the simulation, the conference will offer opportunities for academic contextualisation and informal exchange, fostering both substantive engagement and collegial interaction among participants.
