The Mars Race

About the committee

Prepare to step into the boardroom where humanity's boldest dreams take flight. The SpaceX Board of Directors is convening to tackle one of the most ambitious and defining challenges of our time: the race to become the pioneers to step on Mars! Delegates will take on the roles of visionaries, strategists, and pioneers, debating the future of interplanetary exploration. The agenda is packed with high-stakes challenges: How do we develop technologies to sustain life on Mars? Should colonization be a global collaborative effort among nations or only a private enterprise project? What are the ethical lines in the race to claim the Red Planet? The race isn’t just about reaching Mars first; it’s about deciding what kind of society we build when we get there. Will this be a united leap for mankind or the beginning of interstellar rivalry? The cosmos is calling, and history is in your hands. Will you shape a new era for humanity or let Earth-bound conflicts stall progress? The clock is ticking, the rocket is fueled, and the stars await. Are you ready to answer?

Tibetan Uprising, 1959 CE

About the committee

It is March 1959 and the United Nations Security Council has been called to deal with the brewing tensions between Tibetans and the Chinese Communist Party in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. A few days prior to the beginning of the protests, the Dalai Lama was invited to a theatrical performance of tea at the Chinese Headquarters which he must have attended alone, without any soldiers. Fearing for his life, hundreds of citizens gathered around Norbulignka — the Summer Palace of Dalai Lama — on the morning of March 10. Soon the crowd grew and the people started calling for independence, an old agenda amongst the Tibetans. In the following days, both Tibetan and Chinese artillery militarized the city of Lhasa. The committee starts on the night of March 16 and delegates must act immediately to de-escalate — or blow — the conflict. Duty calls every country within the UNSC to think of strategies to prevent the Himalayas from witnessing a bloody quell while ensuring that the will of the Tibetan people will be heard. How will this committee protect not only the Dalai Lama but also his subjects? Can the Chinese be stopped? Should the Tibetans step into this war and try to win? Is it worth it to live without freedom? Moreover, in the context of the Cold War, superpowers and players of the bipolar world likely have interests in expanding hegemony in the region. The Plateau of Tibet is a chessboard and it seems as if its culture and traditions are nothing but pawns endangered by the checkmate of the Cultural Revolution or another proxy war. Within a one-year timeframe, delegates will negotiate over the map of Asia and tackle unseen challenges in this advanced-level crisis committee. Tick tock!
