Evaluating the Effectiveness of Sanctions Imposed by the the United Nations Security Council

    About the committee

he effectiveness of sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) hinges on their ability to achieve political and security objectives without causing undue harm to civilian populations. Sanctions can deter aggressive actions, compel compliance with international norms, and weaken the capabilities of targeted entities. Their success depends on several factors: the clarity of the objectives, the robustness of enforcement mechanisms, the level of international support, and the adaptability of the measures over time. While sanctions have been instrumental in curbing nuclear proliferation and pressuring regimes to negotiate, they often face challenges such as evasion tactics, unintended humanitarian impacts, and the need for comprehensive, long-term strategies. Ultimately, the effectiveness of UNSC sanctions varies case by case, requiring continuous evaluation and adjustment to ensure they contribute positively to international peace and security.

Adressing the Systematic Discrimination and Hostilities Faced by Indigenous People

    About the committee

The treatment received by indigenous people remains unjust; they are being discriminated against and abused even though the international community is trying to offer them the same possibilities as everyone else has. Poor health systems, a lack of education, forced evictions, and abuse faced by indigenous people. Furthermore, in areas in which conflicts are present, they are prone to even more restrictions, abuses, and losses of their cultural heritage. Thus, they resort to relocation, losing their historical connection with their ancestral lands. The possibilities for such a topic are endless for our delegates, with multiple subtopics that need to be addressed in order to solve the problem at hand. Join us in the SOCHUM Committee to partake in fruitful debates!

Rebuilding Healthcare Systems in Post Conflict Regions

    About the committee

Rebuilding healthcare systems in post-conflict regions is crucial for restoring stability and promoting long-term development. Conflicts often devastate health infrastructure, deplete resources, and disrupt essential services, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Rebuilding efforts must focus on restoring facilities, ensuring supply chains for medications, and training healthcare workers. International aid and cooperation are essential, providing financial support, expertise, and logistical assistance. Additionally, rebuilding efforts should address mental health services to support traumatized populations. Community involvement is key, ensuring that healthcare systems are tailored to the specific needs of the population. Establishing resilient and sustainable healthcare systems not only improves immediate health outcomes but also strengthens overall social and economic recovery, paving the way for a stable and prosperous future.

The "Enrica Lexie" Incident (Italy v. India)

    About the committee

Prospective advocates and judges, dive into a complex international maritime case that highlights the intricacies of jurisdiction and sovereignty: the Enrica Lexie Incident. In 2012, two Italian marines on board the oil tanker Enrica Lexie opened fire on an Indian fishing boat off the coast of Kerala, tragically resulting in the deaths of two Indian fishermen. This incident sparked a heated diplomatic dispute between Italy and India over legal jurisdiction and the application of international law. The core of the dispute lies in conflicting claims of jurisdiction. The outcome of this case raises important questions about the balance between national jurisdiction and international law, and the mechanisms in place for resolving such conflicts. How can justice be ensured for the victims while respecting both Indian and Italian legal systems? Should the marines be tried under Indian or Italian law? Embark on this journey and find out the outcome of this trial!
