    Topic

"Preventing the Misuse of Emerging Biotechnology for International Security Threats"

    About the committee

Rapid advances in biotechnology are transforming medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and other areas of human development. Technologies such as synthetic biology and gene-editing have created opportunities to address some of the world's most pressing challenges, but their increasing accessibility also raises concerns regarding their potential misuse and implications for international security. The dual-use nature of biotechnology makes it particularly difficult to distinguish between legitimate scientific research and activities that could pose security risks. The committee will examine how the international community can strengthen biosecurity, improve cooperation and information-sharing, establish responsible standards for emerging biotechnology, and prevent its misuse while preserving scientific research and innovation for peaceful purposes.

    Topic

“Addressing Gender Inequality in the Development, Deployment and Governance of Emerging Technologies”

    About the committee

Emerging technologies are rapidly transforming education, employment, healthcare, finance, communication, and governance. Yet the benefits of this progress are not distributed equally. Existing disparities in access to education, digital infrastructure, STEM opportunities, and decision-making can influence who develops new technologies, who benefits from them, and whose experiences are reflected in their design. At the same time, technologies trained on historically unequal data or developed without diverse perspectives can unintentionally reproduce existing forms of discrimination. The committee will explore how governments, institutions, and the private sector can ensure greater participation of women in technological development and decision-making, expand equitable access to emerging technologies, and establish frameworks that prevent technological progress from reinforcing existing gender inequalities.
