    About the committee

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) – Committee Description The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), established in 1945 under the UN Charter, is the primary organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Composed of 15 Member States (5 permanent members with veto power – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – and 10 elected non-permanent members), the UNSC holds the unique authority to make legally binding decisions under international law. The Council’s mandate includes: Investigating disputes and situations that may lead to conflict. Imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force to maintain or restore peace. Establishing and overseeing peacekeeping operations. Addressing threats posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), including nuclear weapons. Within the agenda “Preventing Nuclear Proliferation and Disarmament: Towards a Nuclear-Free World”, the UNSC plays a central role in enforcing global non-proliferation treaties, ensuring compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and addressing violations by states or non-state actors. It also considers the security guarantees and disarmament commitments required to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons, while balancing the geopolitical interests of nuclear-armed states. The UNSC, therefore, acts as the guardian of collective security, working to prevent the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare and striving towards long-term peace, disarmament, and international stability.
