Northern California Winter Model UN: An International Academic Competitions Regional Conference
Saturday, January 30, 2027 · Stratford School – Fremont Osgood, Fremont, CA

Students in grades 4 through 8 are invited to step into the role of world diplomats at the Northern California Winter Model UN Conference, a one-day event organized by International Academic Competitions (IAC). IAC Model UN conferences are designed specifically with middle and elementary school students in mind, and are perfect for both delegates attending their first-ever conference, and for delegates with more Model UN experience. It is not necessary to attend as part of a school group, though delegates are welcome to do so.

The day features two committee sessions: a Standard Committee in the morning and a fast-paced Crisis Committee in the afternoon. Students can sign up for one or both. The Topic for all students in the Standard Committee is Low Lying Lands Look to Leave: A Climate Change-Induced Boycott of the UN. Students receive their country assignments two weeks in advance of the conference for the Standard Committee; a background guide is available here.

Please also review IAC’s Expectations and Rules for Standard Committees and IAC’s Expectations and Rules for Crisis Committees.

Depending on enrollment, delegates are grouped by grade, though regardless of how committees are formed, separate awards are given out for students in each grade. The Northern California Winter conference uses IAC’s Topic Set 1, so students who enjoy it can attend a second regional conference later in the season on Topic Set 2.

Award winners become eligible for the Model UN National Championships, held each Memorial Day weekend in Orlando, Florida. Model UN awards can also qualify students for IAC’s international summer events, including the 2027 International History Olympiad in Berlin and the 2028 International Geography Championships (planned for Stockholm).
