    2. Establishing guidelines for the regulation and treatment of sex work and sex workers

    About the committee

Committee description: The Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits. The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations. With the rapid development of technologies in electric mobility all around the world, the automotive industry, one of the most profitable industries in the world, stands at the gates of an entirely new era. To ensure the industry keeps running smoothly, ECOSOC intervenes to establish new guidelines and regulations to address present and future problems in topic 1. Topic 2 revolves around sex work, which currently sits in a gray area of law all around the world, and has severe laps in regulations. This makes this industry a potential danger to human rights and a source of criminal activity if this issue remains unresolved.

    1. Developing opportunities for women's entrepreneurship
    2. Discussing and finding solutions to gendered scientific and technological research

    About the committee

Committee description: UN Women is the UN entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. Gender inequality is pervasive, with women lacking access to decent employment and facing gender wage gaps. All around the world women and girls are routinely denied access to education and healthcare; they are under-represented in economic and political decision-making and suffer from violence and discrimination. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. What do you think of when someone says "enterpreneur?" That is right. Someone who is rich, powerful, and what is most important, a man. This is mainly due to the lack of infrastructure to allow women to become entrepreneurs. UN Women wants to change this in topic 1. Even considering its positive implications, the new era of rapid technological advancemet has sadly also opened up the gates for more dangers to gender equality. The problems that need to addressed in topic 2 include the gender bias in tehnological and scientific development and the gendered standards in the medical sector.

    2. Combatting corruption and global misconduct within the Olympic Games

    About the committee

The International Olympic Committee is the guardian of the Olympic Games and the leader of the Olympic Movement, which keeps the Olympic Games functioning on a global scale. Enter this unorthodox committee and debate all things Olympics. Topic 1 centres around the immensly controvertial question of transgender individuals participating in the games. It is undeniable that this has changed the field in terms of sports, but how do individual countries come into question? Delegates within this committee will be tasked with finding a solution favourable to all countries within the Olympics, which does not hinder any one participant nor give any advantage. A difficult task no doubt, as different countries have widely differing stances on sports and transgender individuals as a whole. In the past, the Olympic Games have commonly seen several issues regarding misconduct by individuals and countries. These are quite varied; however, they include: increased sex trafficking and exploitation of workers in host countries, use of performance enhancing drugs, the participation of previously banned countries, unorderly use of propaganda, and overall corruption. The second topic of this committee centres around adressing these issues and taking measures to combat them. It puts into question the past actions done by countries in regards to the games, and the prospect of being permanently banned from them. Individual countries have their own histories with the games, and will want to have their own goals come to fruition. This committee will definitely be quite the enjoyable experience for any delegate interested in the intricacies of sport and the Olympic Games.

    1. Discussing the possibility of the nationalisation of the Amazon rainforest
    2. Addressing Iran's non-compliance with non-proliferation treaty agreements, possible violations of the non-proliferation treaty, and their consequences

    About the committee

The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. The council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security. The first topic of the Security Council will center around the prospect of the nationalization of the Amazon rainforest. Over the last 50 years, almost 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed, which poses a threat to the largest rainforest in the world. With the forest storing billions of tons of carbon and releasing billions more of water into the atmosphere, it is in the world's interest to preserve it; however, the main question remains: through what means? Within this committee, delegates will have to work together to figure out a way of fairly nationalising the rainforest, whilst keeping their countries' best interests in mind. Nuclear weapons are one of, if not the most dangerous man-made weapons that constantly threaten world peace - this will be the center of discussion for the second topic. In order to maintain the peaceful use of nuclear energy and limit the spread of these weapons, the Non-proliferation treaty was opened for signiture in 1968 and now holds signitures from 191 parties. In recent times, Iran's position within the treaty has came into question and controversy, with there being reports of non-compliance with the IAEA and possible violations. It is up to the Security Council to discuss and learn more about Iran's actions, and realize possible consequences that could befall violators of the Non-proliferation treaty.

Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD)

    Intermediate · English · 20 countries

    Topics

    1. Discussing and finding solutions to the global impacts of artificial intelligence
    2. Establishing guidelines for gene editing

    About the committee

Committee Description: The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) is the United Nations’ home for discussions on science and technology – what is new, what matters, what is changing, what the impact is – and how this affects development and a sustainable future for all. It is the forum that helps ask and frame the critical issues influencing the fields of science and technology today. Some of the important normative issues raised include the technology and life interface, as well as governance of the use and development of frontier technologies – namely, big data analytics, biotech and genome editing, the Internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence. The CSTD is also an open platform where proposals, ideas, experiences, cases, and intellectual thought can be channeled toward making a policy impact. It facilitates concrete collaborations between member states, NGOs and actors in the science, technology and development space. What seemed like far future only a few years ago, becomes reality with the advancements in artificial intelligence and neural networks. With this new technology, new problems arise such as copyright infringement, loss of jobs and misuse of this technology. In topic 1, UNCSTD intervenes to draw up new laws and regulations that will solve these issues. Now only in its infancy, gene editing is becoming more prominent day by day, as the most technologically advanced countries lead research into this new endeavour. Of course, this development presents the risk of weaponisation and other misuse of the technology, which is why UNCSTD aims to establish guidelines to prevent such issues in topic 2.

    1. Debating upon the Catilinarian Conspiracy
    2. Ensuring the long term integrity of the Roman government

    About the committee

It's December of 63BC, and in the halls of the Temple of Concord in Rome, heated debates regarding the Catilinarian Conspiracy are in full swing. With a few historical liberties, take the position of a Roman politician involved in the events of the conspiracy and debate in this recreation of the roman senate, which ultimately dictated the future course of the Roman Republic. Within this committee and first topic, one will have to strike deals, compromise, and manuever their way through the multitude of personalities and agendas which plagued this conspiracy, all with the goal of coming to a favourable resolution. This committee can end in almost any way, and it's up to each and every delegate to use everything they have to accomplish their own goals. The second topic of the historical committee takes in the time period on a much broader scale. A threat to the government such as the Catilinarian Conspiracy is bound to have consequences on the republic as a whole. This topic will center around the long term actions and discussions needed to stabilise the government and possibly reform it. This reflects modern day countries and institutions, and how they constantly have to evolve and adapt to a changing world with changing ideals. Every politician will have their own motives and agendas, whether they be financial gain, military leadership, consular-ship, influence, and many others.
