Ensuring freedom and safety of navigation within the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea

About the committee

The Red Sea, a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean connected to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, is one of the world's most vital maritime trade routes, due to its ability to significantly cut down travel time from Europe to Asia. Fully 20% of the world's container shipping travels through these narrow waters, which border the failing states of Yemen and Somalia. Unfortunately, both these states harbour several armed groups which are hostile to shipping, most notably the Yemeni Houthi rebels and various pirate crews from Somalia. The security of these waters has long been a concern, and these concerns have come to a head in recent months with the Houthi group's full-scale campaign against Western shipping in retaliation for the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. The role of this committee will be to coordinate existing security forces in the region and form a synergized and lasting solution to ensure secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

Establishing the human rights of Afghan women and girls, with particular emphasis on education and health

About the committee

The Universal Declaration on Human Rights states that the right to education and health is among the fundamental human rights. Nonetheless, according to The Guardian, “Under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has become the only country in the world where girls are banned from schooling beyond the age of 11,” based on the policy that they call ‘gender apartheid.’ Not only this, but women in Afghanistan are also one of the demographic groups that do not have proper access to health and medical care. However, the real dilemma is that this is not only limited to Afghan women and girls but there are more women, the majority living in sub-Saharan Africa, that are deprived of the right to these basic human rights solely because of their sex/gender.
