About
Dear Delegates, Advisors, and Partners,
My name is Nathan Mussetter, and I am delighted to invite you to the first Sun God Model United Nations conference. This is the first collegiate conference hosted by UCSD Model United Nations, and will certainly not be our last. The conference will be held in-person from February 10th - 12th on the gorgeous UCSD campus.
This year I hope to establish ourselves as an esteemed conference that delegates will want to return to. It is my goal to ensure that all delegates enjoy themselves and engage in a respectful debate that they can remember. A community of Model UN members who all respect each other will make all of us have a more enjoyable experience.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has created uncertainty within the extended Model UN community. We will deal with any changes that happen from this. If any changes occur, we’ll make sure that you are aware.
Our secretariat has been working tirelessly to ensure that this will be a great experience. We look forward to seeing your debates and smiling faces.
With regards,
Nathan Mussetter
Secretary-General, SGMUN I
Committees
Welcome to the annual meeting of Vought International’s Board of Directors! In this committee, you represent individuals from the company Vought International from the TV series The Boys. In this world, super-powered individuals known as “supes” are created by Vought using Compound V, a Nazi developed serum known only to those in the company. In public, Vought markets these supes as heroes and profits off of them, be it for military, entertainment, or other purposes. However, unbeknownst to the general public, most of these supes are corrupt and selfish, with many having committed grave crimes and atrocities. The goal in this committee is to continue to grow Vought and profit off of these heroes while at the same time protect Vought’s secrets and reputation, no matter the cost.

Hello delegates and welcome to the House of Un-American Activities Committee! The year is 1950 and, following the end of World War II, the Cold War has begun. In this time, the U.S. and its democratic allies have begun a “war” of influence against the USSR and its communist allies. Recent world events have helped spread the influence of communism to nations such as China and Korea. However, the influence has also begun to spread at home. Recently obtained information has led many to believe that Soviet spies and sympathizers are to be found in the entertainment industry and the government, with them occupying jobs ranging from low-level to high profile. Your goal as members of the U.S. House of Representatives Un-American Activities Committee is to root out these agents and their allies. However, you must be wary, lest you lose public support or succumb to Soviet influence.
n 1945, the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) was established as the second of the six main General Assembly Committees of the United Nations. It is focused on macroeconomic policy questions from globalization and international partnerships, to growth and development of all member nations. This year, ECOFIN will reconvene to discuss the stabilization, international support, and advising of the situation in Sri Lanka. Following an ongoing economic and political crisis, thousands of Sri Lankans forcefully entered the presidential palace in Colombo. This was in July. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, member of the prominent and political Rajapaksa family, was forced to flee to Singapore. Twelve days later, Ranil Wickremesinghe, an ally of the former president, was chosen to take the presidency. However, a new presidency does not serve as a panacea to all of the country’s problems. Mounting debt, a crumbling tourism industry, food and fuel shortages, skyrocketing inflation, and an unsure population means the situation in Sri Lanka is far from over.
As polarization grew in American politics, Twitter became the platform of choice for political discussion. Users would duke it out in the public sphere with only 280 characters to a crowd of hundreds of millions of faceless accounts. Among these users was President Donald Trump, who deemed Twitter as the place for any updates for any of his beliefs and plans. The historically casual social media platform became the epicenter for discussions of the rising pandemic, social justice movements, and international relations. However, this sudden sphere of politics brought with it new problems the company had not faced before. From fake news to cancel culture, the platform had to face a plethora of controversies which many felt they were ill-equipped to respond to, and more felt they never truly responded to throughout its growth. However, as President Trump’s era draws to a close, the company now faces a new beast: the 2020 Elections. More users are bound to flood in, and tensions are bound to rise. Additionally, the company has many issues on its docket. Bots are on the rise, sexual content continues to violate content policy without repercussions, and fan culture is raking in an audience that must be retained. The Board of Directors must find a way to address mounting concerns soon, or the company and its users will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.
As the frosty relations of the Cold War finish thawing, nations the world over have begun cooperating in ways never seen before. The Russian Federation’s Roscosmos and the United States’ NASA remain the world’s preeminent Space Capable powers, commanding the largest fleets of orbit-worthy crafts on the planet. However, in the new world ushered by the collapse of the USSR and the Eastern Block, several new competitors have entered the race for space. The ESA from the fledgling European Union, the JAXA from Japan, and the CNSA from China all present worthy opponents to the seemingly unequal capabilities of Russia and America. Plans are being laid for bases and colonies, mining operations on the Moon and missions to Mars. Now questions are being raised over how this new frontier will be administered; how will laws be applied? How will borders on other worlds function, if they will exist at all? Most importantly of all, how will we make sure space remains open for new discoveries and exploration? Will the stars be shut to a select few, or kept free for the world’s collective wonder?
