Hello! Welcome to Japan Metropolitan Model United Nations 2024!

Hosted by Senzoku Gakuen High School located in Kanagawa Japan, this student-run conference focuses not only on high level debates, but also catering to beginner MUNers. JMMUN is also the largest student-run conference held in Japan.

Since COVID restrictions have been lifted, JMMUN will hold all conferences in-person, and have new recreation activities.

Students encouraged to join a Beginner committee are inexperienced at MUN and/or are not confident in English. The chairs for beginner committees will explain procedures in both English and Japanese throughout the conference, but the conference itself will be in English. We will have beginner handouts with explanations of procedures.

Students encouraged to join an Intermediate committee are experienced at or knowledgeable of MUN and/or can engage in day-to-day conversations without difficulty. The chairs for intermediate committees will explain procedures when absolutely needed, but in general, chairs will expect delegates to be fairly knowledgable in MUN.

Students encouraged to join an Advanced (expert) committee are experienced at MUN conferences and can speak English at an academic level. The chairs for the Advanced committee will fully expect delegates to be knowledgeable about the procedures of MUN, and to be able to debate with other delegates.

Delegates are able to apply either as a double or single delegate. There are two spots for every country, but we will close both spots if you apply as a single delegate.

*We will send payment details via email to delegates who have applied by 12/20, after the early application closes. For delegates applying after this date, we will also send details via email once we receive your application.

    Established in 1972, UNEP is the leading global authority within the United Nations system, dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and fostering collective action to protect the Earth's natural resources. As the principal environmental organization of the United Nations, UNEP acts as a catalyst, advocate, and facilitator for a wide range of environmental activities, collaborating with governments, civil society, and the private sector to create lasting positive impacts. The loss of biodiversity, driven primarily by human activities, has reached unprecedented levels, threatening the delicate balance of ecosystems and endangering countless plant and animal species. To tackle the loss of diversity, it is necessary that we embrace a multifaceted approach that recognizes the complex interplay between environmental, economic, and social factors.

    About the committee

    FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) was founded in 1945 to “achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives.” FAO takes responsibility for assembling resources to solve the crisis and currently has 194 member nations. The world is facing an immense food crisis fueled by conflict, economic shocks, COVID-19, and climate change. In 2023, 345 million people in 79 countries are suffering from acute food insecurity. Increasing temperature, weather variability, extreme weather events, and natural disasters have always had a great impact on food production because of agriculture’s vulnerability to climate change. As the effects of climate change worsen, managing food production by reducing emissions, enhancing resilience and increasing productivity are in need.

    About the committee

    The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was established in 1997 as the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention. This was part of former Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s efforts to reform the organization to “[consolidate and enhance] United Nations activities” in the field of criminal justice, which resulted in the merging of two entities: the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme (established in 1991) and the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (established in 1990). The resulting organization was renamed in 2002 to the UNODC we know today. UNODC is mandated to lead the global war against illicit drugs, transnational organized crime, and corruption and to uphold United Nations conventions related to criminal justice. Collaborating with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), this organization also protects the human rights of those behind bars and facilitates their social reintegration.

    The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was founded on June 26, 1945 with the hope of bringing people and issues together to "promote collective action for a sustainable world." This council "is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits." The Economic and Social Council for JMMUN 2024 will focus on how current society is not equal and what steps could be taken to distribute the causes of this in our world where globalization has spread.

    About the committee

    HRC (Human Rights Council) was established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly, replacing the Commission on Human Rights. It is dedicated to strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe, addressing situations of human rights violations, and making recommendations on such situations. As the internet becomes more and more widespread, freedom of speech is a topic that must be addressed globally and requires international cooperation in order to maintain a balance between humans’ various fundamental rights on a global platform.
