Introduction

GVMUN isn't a regular experience. This virtual, 2-day-spanning conference is centered on poverty and encapsulates everything there is to know and do involving MUN, so that delegates from all levels can leave with improved debating, speaking, and writing skills, and a bettered understanding of Model United Nations.

Schedule 🌍

  • On Day 1, beginner delegates learn about the basics of MUN, while intermediate & advanced delegates get started on their position papers, which are done with the guidance of their chairs. Then, delegates begin to explore their background guides and take their own stances on the issue. Day 1 delegates end the day having completed their own position paper, learned about MUN, and prepared to become the best delegates they can be. They'll be assigned the task to research their issue and assigned role to the best of their abilities, and will get to keep the materials they were given access to to learn MUN.
  • On Day 2, after a quick opening ceremony, delegates will begin their conferences in smaller zooms of 45-minute intervals, joining back after a 5-minute break after each session. In these meetings, delegates will form groups, debate and give speeches, write out a draft resolution, and undergo the process to select their final resolution. Following the end of all committees, a closing ceremony will be issued, and participation certificates will be downloadable for all delegates; however, the Best Delegate, Outstanding Delegate, Best Position Paper, and Honorable Mention awards will be announced simultaneously, and delegates will leave Day 2 having gained both a certificate (or more!) and the experience of a conference that will help them win awards in many more to come.

Theme 🌎

This year, GVMUN is proud to announce its recurring theme for committee topics: POVERTY & GLOBAL DILEMMAS. This encompasses refugee issues, economic disparity, homelessness, unemployment crises, and more important global dilemmas critical to discuss and find solutions to. With their participation in GVMUN delegates will learn to become world citizens, and ultimately world leaders – and it is with this promise that GVMUN 2023 is proud to open its doors to delegates of all levels and ages.

This committee addresses a critical refugee crisis involving the overflowing of the world's biggest refugee camp due to a mass fleeing in 2017 following the Rohingya mass genocide earlier that year.     This conference is at an ADVANCED LEVEL. This means that the conference's pace, its terminology, the level of its resolutions, and delegate behavior, is expected to be staggeringly elevated. Delegates with +4 conference experience are recommended to attend this level. Syria is the world’s largest refugee crisis, with upwards of 6.8 million Syrians having been forced to flee their country and 6.9 million people internally displaced in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq. Following 2020, a new problem arose: the effects of COVID-19 on the already-in-poverty refugees. Also due to discrimination, unemployment, lack of access to healthcare, education, and permanent housing, are all factors worsening the situation. It is the role of this committee to find a long-term solution to resolve this refugee crisis, and support the refugees themselves as quickly as possible. DELEGATES ARE FREE TO ELECT A MORE SPECIFIC TOPIC WITHIN THIS ISSUE TO ADDRESS.

    This conference is at a BEGINNER LEVEL. Provided that delegates join Day 1, delegates with no-to-some experience are welcome! Delegates with enough experience to not need to attend Day 1 are encouraged to do so anyways, but will not be penalized for missing the event. It will be this committee's responsibility to focus on the challenges and solutions related to providing quality education for disadvantaged children in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. Delegates will examine the specific barriers that hinder access to education in the region, such as poverty, gender inequality, limited resources, and conflict, and will aspire to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all children. Delegates are encouraged to read their background guide upon its availability and begin to research their stance, but are not obligated to write their position papers until Day 1 of the conference.

    This conference is at a BEGINNER LEVEL. Provided that delegates join Day 1, delegates with no-to-some experience are welcome! It will be this committee's responsibility to address the gender wage gap and promote the economic empowerment of women as a means to alleviate poverty and economic distress. Participants would delve into the challenges and disparities that contribute to the gender pay gap, such as discriminatory practices and limited access to opportunities for career advancement. The goal of this committee is to focus on countries with the least amount of gender equality and find solutions to improve access to education for all genders, and approach an equal salary for women in the workforce. Delegates are encouraged to read their background guide upon its availability and begin to research their stance, but are not obligated to write their position papers until Day 1 of the conference.
