Boundless 2023: Vox Iuventutis

BoundlessMUN 2023 is a UK-based joint-university free virtual Model United Nations Conference that aims to make MUN accessible to all. The major themes and educational goal of our conference emphasises the need for aid and positive action to be directed towards refugees in this country. 

Now perhaps more than ever before in recent memory, the plight of vulnerable people in the United Kingdom is at it's most dire. The UK Government openly challenges international law and it's own human rights obligations in an attempt to push refugees and asylum seekers even further to the margins of society. In our House of Commons committee, delegates will be assuming the roles of MPs from multiple political parties debating the Illegal Migration Bill.  

Our UNHCR committee will simulate attempts for multilateral action on the refugee crisis unfolding in the Mediterranean and other parts of the world, while the Security Council will debate it's response the rising tensions unfolding in the Indian subcontinent between India, Pakistan, and Kashmir, the last of which has been rocked by Indian attempts to increase it's control over the region in recent years. The emphasis in both committees will be on alleviating the plight of the most vulnerable people disproportionally affected by macro factors which  threatens to jeopardize the lives and livelihoods of countless people. 

For our inaugural crisis committee, BoundlessMUN is proud to bring to life the violent and twisted world of Westeros, where delegates will assume the roles of some of Game of Thrones's most famous and infamous characters. Drawing elements from both the books and the television show, this Game of Thrones crisis will feature political intrigue, military struggle, love, hate, war, marriages, and betrayal. Depending on the level of interest, we are also offering a Midnight Crisis committee- more details regarding this will come soon! 

The majority of our conference is free of charge, with a small fee for our crisis committees and an optional online socials package so we can deliver the best possible experience for delegates - all funds go directly towards running the conference. We will also be hosting two online training sessions prior to the conference for newcomers and experienced delegates who'd like a refresh of the basics.. One of these sessions will be targeted towards the crisis, the other will be targeted towards the other committees.

This crisis will draw from both the books and the television show, picking up from the execution of Ned Stark onwards and putting you in the driver's seat. Battles will be fought, kings will rise and fall, and the realm will bleed. This committee is recommended for delegates with some prior Model UN experience, but the most important assets for any delegate in this crisis are creativity, cunning, and moral depravity. A training session will be provided for newcomers or returners who wish to brush up on their skills.

    BoundlessMUN's House of Commons will debate the two intertwined agendas of climate and refugee justice. Delegates will be able to represent the UK Government, the Opposition, and several smaller parties. Recommended for delegates familiar with UK parlimentary politics . The UK public elects 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) to represent their interests and concerns in the House of Commons. MPs consider and propose new laws, and can scrutinise government policies by asking ministers questions about current issues either in the Commons Chamber or in Committees.

    About the committee

    The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

    (This is not one of the main committees - please do not put this as your only choice!) “The great questions of the day will not be settled by means of speeches and majority decisions but by iron and blood” ― Otto von Bismarck The July Crisis was perhaps the first of many pivotal moments of the twentieth century. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian terrorist, plunging the world into chaos. However, this was not necessarily a foregone conclusion - World War One in the form we recognise was simply one possible outcome. Between Ferdinand's death and the outbreak of war, a whole host of possibilities await. In this Midnight Crisis, you will be thrust into the shoes of European heads of state as diplomatic cables start transmitting the astonishing news and the inferno of war looms over the continent. Will you seek a peaceful resolution and keep your country out of war at all costs? Bow so low to the brutality of realpolitik that Bismark himself would blush? Engage with other nations in machiavellian plots to use the situation for your own benefit, or try and coax members of opposing alliances into your fold? This a particularly open-ended crisis; how you choose to resolve the crisis is left mostly up to you. This crisis will take place entirely over discord; however, we are charging a small fee which will be directly donated to our NGO partner, Refugee Education UK. Midnight crisis will be flexible in size - assignments will take place once we have gauged the level of interest and formatted the crisis appropriately.
