SCHOOLING AND PROTECTION OF CHILDREN IN CONFLICTS ZONES #1 Country: Algeria

The security and the education of children in conflict zones has become an alarming issue over the past years. Indeed, Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) states that “Everyone has the right to education” and thus introduces the importance of equal education for all. However, this basic right has been unfairly denied to some children living in conflict zones, and it is the role of institutions such as UNESCO to reinstate it. According to UNICEF , today, almost 24 millions of children living in zones stricken by crisis do not go the school. This number is all the more preoccupying since one the Millenium Development Goal was to establish education for all by the end of 2015. Thus, although international efforts has been made, progress is still very much needed about this major issue of our contemporary society and the path is still long towards a complete education for all in the world. Schooling and protection of children in conflict zone is a major keystone to make the world a better place to live in. In fact, providing children with an education is society’s main instrument for reproducing and advancing its values and knowledge. Children are the future citizens of the world and investing in their education is a step towards future.
