Topic 1: Creating universal morality guidelines for research in the field of genetic modification of human embryos

The first issue on the agenda is the making of a universal set of guidelines surrounding research into the genetic modification of the human embryo. Within Australia, there is the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Embryo Research Licensing Committee, which was set up to provide the citizens of Australia with guidelines surrounding the rules and regulations that are involved in research with the human embryo. It was established by the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 and is a Principal Committee of the NHMRC.
