Tom Schoen - ECOSOC - Pakistan Topic 1: Empowering women in line with the SDGs
The Economic and Social Council operates within the boundaries of the UN Charter, as such its Member States have devoted themselves to overcome a wide range of international problems. The main goals of the Council are therefore to promote raising living standards and employment, establish economic and social progress, develop educational and cultural cooperation and to encourage wide range respect for human rights. To achieve these goals, the Council has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that every member state should strive to achieve. One of these SDGs is the empowerment of Women.
It is necessary to outline that many women in the world still find themselves in a position of relative deprivation in comparison to the opposite sex. Only recently did the problems of sexual self-determination come to the foreground. Although the quest for mutual respect and gender equality finds itself in its infancy, it is steadily becoming part of the grander narrative of international affairs. For instance, in 1979, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Moreover, in 1995, during the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, leaders from all over the world adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
