As the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon rightly said: “In places such as Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen, children suffer through a living hell.” Armed conflict totally devastates the young generation as they undergo physical injuries and psychological trauma. As per the statistics released by UNICEF, more than 20 million children became refugees, 2 million died, 6 million became permanently disabled or seriously injured and 1 million became orphans as a direct result of armed conflict over the last decade.
The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) defines child soldiers as "any child—boy or girl—under eighteen years of age, who is part of any kind of regular or irregular armed force or armed group in any capacity."
