Background: Rule of Law Under the SDGs

Today, there is an immediate need for criminal justice reform and strengthening the rule of law in the majority of the countries in the world; to ensure a fair and unbiased system in every nation that fosters positive sustainable development. As WIMUN 2017’s main conference theme focuses on Sustainable Development Goal #16: Developing peaceful, just and inclusive societies, for the purposes of this paper, it imperative to focus on the topic of “rule of law” under the umbrella indicator of 16.3 which states “Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.” Under 16.3, the indicators become more comprehensive - inclusive of victims of violence in the previous 12 months who were able to report their victimization to competent authorities and unsentenced detainees as a proportion of overall prison population.
