### WHAT IS TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS??

Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This may encompass providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage or the extraction of organs or tissues, including for surrogacy and ova removal.

Although human trafficking can occur at local levels, it has transnational implications, as recognized by the UN in the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (referred to as the Trafficking Protocol or Palermo Protocol), an international agreement under the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime(CTOC).Its purpose is to facilitate international cooperation in investigating and prosecuting and to protect & assist victims with full respect for their rights as established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS- > > "recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation."

### RELEVANCE OF THE ISSUE

Trafficking is a form of modern slavery, an epidemic spreading its tentacles throughout the world. According to US state department and International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 20 million people around the world are living in slavery. ILO estimates that women and girls make up the largest share of forced labour victims with 11.4 million victims (55%), compared to 9.5 million (45%) men and boys. An estimated 1.2 million females are ushered into global commercial sex market every year. US Department of Justice estimates 14,500-17,500 foreign nationals trafficked into US each year. Almost 100,000-300,000 children go missing each year in US.
