European Border and Coast Guard – The NEC Directive
During the 1980s the Netherlands along with other four countries, started the negotiations which would lead to the creation of the Schengen area, the project consisted in building a territory without internal borders where the free movement of citizens were guaranteed. Nowadays, the Schengen area is no longer a project, but one of the basis where the EU is sustained, and the Netherlands, having claimed the need of a common EU response on controlling borders, has had as a priority during its EU presidency, the creation of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
