Topic A: Border and Coast Guard Regulation

The European migrant crisis began in 2015 when rising numbers of people arrived undocumented in the EU, travelling across the Mediterranean Sea or overland through Southeast Europe. These people included asylees seeking to apply for refugee status and the right of asylum, economic migrants and a small number of hostile agents including ''Islamic States militants''. The unauthorized foreign migrants came mostly from Muslim-majority countries of regions south and east of Europe, including Western Asia, South Asia, and Africa. In 2015, the European Union witnessed high pressures at its external borders with an estimated 1.5 million people crossing the borders illegally between January and November. All these migratory flows which crossed the external borders of the European Union showed that existing structures at Union and Member State level cannot address the challenges arising from this large influx.
