Portugal is very fond of the Schengen Agreement declared in 1995 which abolished border controls on internal frontiers and substituted them by more concentrated controls of the external borders of the Schengen Area. Due to rising numbers of refugees seeking asylum in the European Union, the Schengen Agreement is in danger as some Member States have reintroduced internal border controls temporarily.
