European Border and Coast Guard Regulation Because of the critical political situation afflicting a vast area in the Middle East and in Africa, massive migratory flows are currently reaching Europe following different routes through Italy or through Greece and the Balkans. This migration has clearly demonstrated that the European structures whose aim is to control and regulate these flows are inadequate. In fact, the reintroduction of internal border controls in different states belonging to the Schengen area has shown that the Frontex Agency (created with the Council Regulation 2007/2004 as a first step towards European integration in this field) is not the right answer to the extraordinary pressures the European external borders are facing. In 2015 Denmark received 21.316 applications for asylum, whereas in 2016 the submitted requests were only 6.235. This number has decreased thanks to the policies put into practice by the government.
