Topic I: Measures towards safeguarding maritime ecosystems

The Republic of Chile recognizes the high importance of ecosystems for the well-being and prosperity of a society as they provide with food, clean air and fresh water. They also represent an exceptional source of outdoor recreation opportunities. Chile is a long and narrow South American country located to the west of the Andes, between latitudes 17° and 56°S and longitudes 66° and 75°W. Consequently, the country’s landscapes are extremely varied, consisting of desert, forest, valleys, mountains and several distinct ecosystems. The Pacific Ocean is the border in the west and appears to be a highly relevant marine environment for the entire country.
