Due to instability in the Middle-East, a large number of people flee from the region into Europe. The two main origin countries of people seeking refuge in Europe are Syria and Iraq, both of which are fighting a civil war. The position of the Netherlands is and has always been that people fleeing from war must be offered shelter in a humane way. The Netherlands is committed to the obligations that flow from the 1951 Refugee Convention.
