South Sudan Delegation Position paper for UNHCR The history of our Country is relatively recent and extremely troubled. Indeed, South Sudan became an official independent state only in 2011. Nonetheless, little after its coming into existence it has been underwent Civil War between two rival ethnic groups: the Dinkas and the Nuer. In 2013 our Country’s scenario became critical, as the former Vice President Riek Machar, a Nuer, was dismissed by the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, a Dinka, leading to violent conflicts between the two opposing factions and thousands of casualties.
