Position Paper for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Iceland

“One of the basic duties of any state government is to ensure the security and defence of the nation.” Nevertheless the people of Iceland are unarmed and have been unarmed since the days of our forefathers. Iceland never had an army or waged a war on another country. What was valid in 1949, when we joined the NATO, is valid until today. Today according to the Global Peace Index Iceland is considered as the most peaceful nation on earth. However during the last decades our country has faced many changes.
