Despite of the improved relation between Russia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) after the fall of the Soviet Union, several incidents have contributed to an increased tension between these two. Norway has signed the North Atlantic Treaty on the 4th of Arpril 1949 in Washington and has been an active participant ever since.

During The Second World War, Norway intended to remain neutral. However, on April the 9th 1940, Germany invaded Norway because of its strategic location in the North Atlantic. Together with the support of the United Kingdom, France and Poland, Norway could stay independent until the 7th of June. Afterwards, the king and government of Norway fled to London.
