Italy recognizes one of the major reasons for the increasing hostilities in the South China Sea is due to contestable sovereignty over the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the region. Six different nations, 5 of them have sent forces and built military infrastructures, including artificial islands, to show their sovereignty and ‘effective occupation’ over Spratly islands. Unless the parties to the dispute are going to be more flexible, tensions will remain high and further escalation is possible. It is the responsibility of the international community to exercise pressure in order to assure peace and respect of international law.
