Topic A: Preventing refugee crisis – A Pro-active approach

Since 2010 the islamic militant group Boko Haram is controlling the north of Nigeria. Mostly affected are the north-east regions Borno, Adamawa and Yobe at the border to Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Also those border regions are concerned by the crisis, not only because of refugees. In 2014 10,000 people were killed by Boko Haram and more than two million people escaped to the neighbor states. Since 2015 Boko Haram is joining the Islamic State, and calls itself now as a „IS’s West African province“ (BBC).

Last year, the UN refugee chief António Guterres said, that the crisis triggered by Boko Haram is similar to the refugee crisis in the Syrian civil war. The whole world is just concentrating on the Syrian conflicts. So why not on the conflicts in Nigeria?
