Introduction

The delegation of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia looks forward to addressing and discussing the issues of counter terrorism and violent extremism, along with an election monitoring procedures reform with the fellow member states of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), as both these represent different approaches of significant importance to establish and sustain national and individual security and uphold democratic values on a global scale.

Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism

Background

The specter of transnational terrorism has risen from a peripheral issue of the 1980’s to one of the foremost security challenges facing the international arena. A post- 9/11 environment and the war on terror in the Middle East fostered an environment which allowed international terrorism to flourish. An unprecedented level of brutality and technological advancement delineate the main components of a new wave of terror that oppresses human rights, threatens democratic values and endangers global amity.
