Position Paper for the North Atlantic Council

The topics before the North Atlantic Council (NAC) are: A Strategy for the Baltics and the Notion of Collective Defence, Transparency & Public Accountability. The Republic of Estonia, which joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2005, is determined to defend the sovereignty and independence of all Baltic Nations against foreign aggression. Estonia is committed to improve the public accountability and transparency of the NATO and therefore strengthening its legitimacy as provider of International Security co-operation.

I. A strategy for the Baltics

The recent Russian aggressions against Georgia in 2008, the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing, Russian fuelled conflict in Eastern Ukraine are threatening own security and the security of our neighbouring countries. The continued violation of Estonian Airspace and those of neighbouring states by military aircraft of the Russian Federation is equally reason for concern. The possibility of Hybrid Warfare, as demonstrated by Russian Federation soldiers in Crimea, is threatening, especially because of the high ethnically Russian population in the Republics of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
