Topic 1: The Baltic Strategy

Particularly with regard to the illegal and sudden annexation of Crimea in March 2014 the Baltic states, constituting a direct border between Russia and the NATO territories, are in danger of further military actions by the Russian Federation. The sudden annexation proved the unpredictability of Russian activities once more and clarified the need to secure the region. Therefore, especially the Suwalki Gap is endangered, due to the potentially important strategic position of this area for the Russian Federation as well as for the NATO and due to comparatively low stability regarding local disputes between Poland and Lithuania as much as ethnic tensions.
