Introduction The State of Iran is a country located in the Middle East. It borders the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, and the Caspian Sea. It shares land borders with Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. Its capital is Teheran, which is internationally recognized. The officially spoken language is Persian. Others include Azeri Turkic and Turkic dialects, Kurdish, Gilaki and Mazandarani, Luri, Balochi and Arabic. Iran proclaimed itself as the Islamic Republic of Iran (official name) on the 1st of April 1979. The current supreme leader of Iran is Ali Khamenei, who assumed office on the 4th of June 1989.
