Joe Banish 23 July 2016 GMNATO 2016 Position Paper: Estonia and the North Atlantic Council Estonia and Russia have always had a tense relationship, in part due to Estonia’s status as a satellite nation of the Soviet Union. These tensions have been further exacerbated with Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and near the Estonian border. As one of the few NATO members who shares a land border with Russia, Estonia perceives these actions as a threat to its sovereignty, and fully embraces NATO’s deterrence efforts.
